ABOUT
My name is Vasilisa Ikonnikova. I was born in Saint-Petersburg, Russia and moved to Canada when I was 16 years old.
In my film, I explore themes of childhood, familial dysfunction, inter-generational conflict, and escapism. I rethink my traumatic memories of communal meals in a dysfunctional family by blending autobiographical fact with elements of Russian folklore. I also portray a complex relationship dynamic between siblings, focusing on small interactions and non-verbal cues. I explore my cultural identity by incorporating russian patterns and having a traditional Vepsian food as the centerpiece of the story.
The story focuses on two sisters afraid of their drunk great uncle. After the sudden mysterious disappearance of Shangi, a traditional pastry from the small ethnic group Vepsi in the North of Russia, two sisters have to hide under the table to avoid punishment.
The story is based on Russian mythology: Domovoi is a household spirit in the Slavic religious tradition. It is the protector of the household, a shape-shifter that appears in various forms. The Domovoi is easily offended and could become mischievous, sometimes even choking people in their sleep. It must be bribed with food to keep it content. It is also known to have a special connection with children.
